THE DIRTY VERSION
OL' DIRTY BASTARD LIVE & UNCUT
Wednesday, May 19, 2004
But I'd be remiss in my journalistic duties if, amidst all this glowing praise, I neglected to mention the inexplicable abomination lurking at the end of the album. Unable to resist branding his handiwork with the Wu-Tang seal, the RZA brings in Ghostface Killah and Masta Killa (no relation) to create "Black Mamba," a truly laughable song that seeks to do for Kill Bill what "Wild Wild West" did for, well, Wild Wild West: namely, summarize the movie's plot in rap form. Why anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me, but it leads to a lot of unforgettable lines, including my personal favorite: "Off with your head! The scene is gory / Single-edged steel blade designed by Hattori / Hanzo," the worst fictional name-check since Will Smith's "Once upon a time in the West / Madman lost his damn mind in the West: [movie villain Dr. Arliss] Loveless."

Old Dirty Bastard (aka Dirt McGirt) also drops a few whoppers, ignoring the whole Kill Bill thing for a few lines ("Japanese bitch be suckin' my dick / Puerto Rican ho's be lickin' my spliff") until finally unveiling his masterpiece: "California Mountain Snake on the bake / Givin' me head while I'm countin' my cake." It doesn't get much better than that.

Somewhere, an eyeless Daryl Hannah is spinning in her grave.
