ODB Album Preview: Star-Studded A Son Unique Is Radio Ready

Missy Elliott, Pharrell, Joe Budden help preserve his legacy on posthumous LP.

by Hillary Crosley

One of the most animated rappers of all time, Ol' Dirty Bastard is still riffing about sex, drugs, jail and tomfoolery. Only now he's not around see his fans enjoy it.

And it seems like a lot of people will be enjoying A Son Unique, since the rapper's first posthumous LP is definitely his most radio-ready album. It's thick with featured guests, including Missy Elliott, Pharrell and Joe Budden, but it also preserves the unique chemistry ODB shared with fellow Wu-Tangers RZA and Ghostface.

The June 21 release showcases the likes of the Neptunes, Macy Gray, Beanie Sigel, Raekwon, N.O.R.E., Lil' Fame of M.O.P., Clipse, Young Gunz's Young Chris and Method Man.

The standout track is "Back in the Air," featuring Ghostface, on which rolling bass-guitar samples flow throughout while soothing horns slide. "This is Dirt McGirt, not P. Diddy," Big Baby Jesus says just before he threatens that the "bitch better have my money." Ah, the kid was in his element.

RZA produced four songs on the 13-cut effort, including "Back in the Air" and the aesthetically conceptual "Stomp," which features a marching army echoing in the shadows. "Intoxicated" also displays the legendary Wu posse chemistry.

Elliott, one of the record's many radio familiars, appears on a track produced by British DJ Mark Ronson, who samples a thundering, wild-piano riff. While the chorus sings, "Dirt Dog, Dirt Dog, he's our man/ If he can't do it no one can," a crazy-sounding ODB says he's "Wu-Tang's new John Coltrane."

DJ Premier shows up on "Pop Shots," which is also the first single. Using the trademark horns that have made Premier famous, Lil' Fame rips through the track with a cottonmouth flow. Meanwhile, Dirt Dog hollers "pop shots" offbeat while Beanie Sigel growls, "Roc-A-Fella, Roc-A-Fella, Roc-A-Fella" in the background.

The Neptunes-produced "Operator" showcases both Pharrell and Clipse. The female-oriented track utilizes crazy drums but doesn't outdo the Damon Elliott-produced "ODB Don't Go Breaking My Heart." Macy Gray, who makes a couple of appearances on the disc, joins Dirty for the off-key and peculiar cover of the song originally performed by Elton John and Kiki Dee. Suffice it to say, it's a novelty track.

N.O.R.E. hops on the Dame Grease-produced "Dirty & Grimey." It features electronics reminiscent of a video game, with the two MCs rhyming back and forth. Meanwhile, Dirty shouts out to Slick Rick's "A Teenage Love" on his track "Don't Hurt Me Again."

Unfortunately, an ODB tribute song recorded by Wu-Tang was not finished in time to make the album, but it should be on the soundtrack to the upcoming film "Death of a Dynasty," according to a spokesperson.

Although ODB's passed on, his label, friends and cohorts refuse to let his legacy waste away. And with 13 tracks of well-formulated and exciting beats, ODB's wildly endearing personality still shines through to his fans on A Son Unique.

RZA remembered back to when Jones was a young teenager and chose the righteous name of Ason Unique. He said that as Ason Unique, his cousin was radiant, beautiful and angelic, more powerful than he was in the ODB persona. As the years passed and RZA gave him the name of Ol' Dirty Bastard, he noticed his cousin changing more and more, adopting the characteristics of his stage moniker and going wild.

"He was wild," [his father, William] Jones said, smiling. "He would kid around all the time and joke. We used to have a lot of family over and he would be the jokester. All the rest of them could sing. Dirty couldn't sing, so he would do something to make everybody laugh. He was a good kid. We used to go fishing in Far Rockaway [Queens] and that was his passion. People don't know he loved to fish."

Cherry Jones, ODB's mother, was informed shortly after his death and called the phone call "every mother's worst dream." "My son, Russell Jones, passed away," she said in a statement. "To the public, he was known as Ol' Dirty Bastard, but to me, he was known as Rusty, the kindest, most generous soul on earth. I appreciate all the support and prayers that I have received. Russell was more than a rapper, he was a loving father, brother, uncle, and most of all, son."

$25,000? I would do that shit for free in a heartbeat.
Nothing but questions arise when it comes to Wu-Tang's most famous member, Ol' Dirty Bastard and also known nowadays as Dirt McGirt. After being home for more than a year already fans all over the world ask themselves "What is going on with ODB?". He has been fairly quiet the last year. Hey come on, we're talking about ODB here, there have been times that he was in the news almost every day of the week.

Music is what fans care about the most and therefore it's no surprise that most of the questions fans have for ODB are about his album. There isn't a day going by that we get e-mail or a topic on the forum asking "When the hell is ODB releasing an album?" Somewhere between now and the next three months we should be receiving our highly anticipated doses of ODB.

The album, entitled Dirt McGirt, features a vast array of artists such as Ludacris, Macy Gray, Chad, Pharell, Method Man, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Ghostface and many more. The song Keep The Receipt which was planned to be on Kanye West's debut album College Dropout will be the Dirt McGirt album. Other producers for this project are RZA, The Neptunes, Swizz Beats, Soul Diggas and Rockwilder. Backed up by two teams, the album will be a musical Roc-A-Fella/Wu-Tang blend.

Besides the album, Ol' Dirty Bastard is also working on DVDs, movies and a tour is in the works as he will be able to tour outside of the country again next December. His clothing company should launch nationwide when the album comes out, as of yet there is no release date known yet. For more information about the clothing company you can call 1866-ODB-DIRT.

But I'd be remiss in my journalistic duties if, amidst all this glowing praise, I neglected to mention the inexplicable abomination lurking at the end of the album. Unable to resist branding his handiwork with the Wu-Tang seal, the RZA brings in Ghostface Killah and Masta Killa (no relation) to create "Black Mamba," a truly laughable song that seeks to do for Kill Bill what "Wild Wild West" did for, well, Wild Wild West: namely, summarize the movie's plot in rap form. Why anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me, but it leads to a lot of unforgettable lines, including my personal favorite: "Off with your head! The scene is gory / Single-edged steel blade designed by Hattori / Hanzo," the worst fictional name-check since Will Smith's "Once upon a time in the West / Madman lost his damn mind in the West: [movie villain Dr. Arliss] Loveless."

Old Dirty Bastard (aka Dirt McGirt) also drops a few whoppers, ignoring the whole Kill Bill thing for a few lines ("Japanese bitch be suckin' my dick / Puerto Rican ho's be lickin' my spliff") until finally unveiling his masterpiece: "California Mountain Snake on the bake / Givin' me head while I'm countin' my cake." It doesn't get much better than that.

Somewhere, an eyeless Daryl Hannah is spinning in her grave.

SOHH.com : Your Low-Carb Hip-Hop Source : 2004.04.07: "Old Dirty Bastard and R. Kelly are among the celebs featured in Blender magazine's '50 Craziest Pop Stars Ever' while cover boys Outkast talk breakup rumors.
Ranking at no.9 and no.48 respectively, Old Dirty Bastard aka Dirt McGirt along with accused and later exonerated crooner, R. Kelly, stand among crazed legends such as Little Richard, George Clinton, Courtney Love, Rick James, Axl Rose, Whitney Houston and Micheal Jackson in Blender's '50 Craziest Pop Stars Ever' list. Ranking a slot ahead of Black Sabbath front man Ozzy Osbourne, Old Dirty's craziest moment is said to be a January 2000 trial in which he referred to the district attorney as a sperm donor."

Ol' Dirty Bastard 'will never leave' Wu-Tang Clan: "OL' DIRTY BASTARD has denied rumours that he is to quit WU-TANG CLAN saying the he 'will never leave'.
The rapper signed to Roc-A-Fella in May following his release from jail, in which he spent two years on drug charges.
ODB's manager Jarred Weisfeld said: 'Dirty never left Wu, he will never leave Wu and his album has five songs produced by The RZA featuring songs with Macy Gray, Ghostface, Method Man, Buddha Monk.'
He added: 'If Wu-Tang does another album there is no chance Dirty won't be on it.'

In an article about album-bundled DVDs, RollingStone.com notes that the eponymous Dirt McGirt album has now been pushed back to a May release and will reportedly include a DVD including live New York performance footage. "[H]e also waxes poetic on Michelle Pfeiffer and the value of masturbating while in prison."

Ol' Dirty Bastard Hits Campaign Trail With New Album

Dirty will soon hit the road like a man trying to get elected. Touring for the first time since emerging from prison last year, his short outing begins February 9 in New York at the B.B. After completing his February run, Dirty will perform seven or eight dates per month for the rest of the year, his manager said.

The dates will promote a new album, Dirt McGirt, which drops in March. The still-untitled first single features Missy Elliott and Fabolous. Dirty will screen his live DVD in movie theaters across the country the day before the LP drops, and the DVD will hit stores a couple of months later.

BILLBOARD: "After a tumultuous recent history which has seen its members incarcerated, dropped from record labels and at odds with one another, pioneering hip-hop collective the Wu-Tang Clan will embark on what is said to be its final tour next year, Billboard.com can reveal. The 60-city outing will likely get underway in May or June, coinciding with Riverhead Books' release of the comprehensive group history, 'The Wu-Tang Manual.'"

But the performance that everyone may remember the longest was the paroled-in-February OL' DIRTY BASTARD's not so triumphant return from prison Friday at the Knit. Surrounded by his Brooklyn Zoo posse and a few women apparently auditioning for Girls Gone Wild, the man now known as Dirt McGirt stood in a motionless daze, staring confusedly out into the frat boys and hipsters going apeshit over his presence. Now and then he'd break into a random wordless wail or chant, and occasionally he'd remember lyrics. At one point, drool began to drip from a corner of his mouth. It was like watching a lame dog lying in the street, waiting to get hit. [Village Voice

  * RZA, B. B. King Blues Club and Grill, 243 West 42nd Street, Manhattan, (212) 997-4144. RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan's visionary producer (and not-always-visionary rapper), plays a show in Midtown in support of his rather disappointing new CD, 'Birth of a Prince' (Wu-Records/Sancturary/BMG). It may not be a great performance, but it's sure to be an interesting one, especially since Dirt McGirt (formerly O.D.B.), the black sheep of the Clan and that's saying something is also to perform. Sunday night at 8; tickets are $25 (Sanneh). [nytimes.com]
JC Chasez Theorizes About Girl-On-Girl Action, Nabs Ol' Dirty For Video

"With 'Some Girls (Dance With Women),' Chasez will likely be getting some attention of his own. The song, due at radio and video outlets at the end of November, features a provocative accompanying video and a remix with a guest appearance from Dirt McGirt, the rapper formerly known as Ol' Dirty Bastard."

"The record company said this is an event, you have to do something," Chasez explained. "I was like, 'I don't know, I kind of like it the way it is.' They were like, 'Just name somebody you think would rip this.' I tried to think of someone unique. Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott are amazing rappers, but they've done a million collaborations. So in my mind, Dirty is fresh. Fresh out of jail, yes. Nevertheless, no one's heard from him in a while and he's due to make some noise. And the verse he did is really cool."

ODB Lends A Hand As State Property Shoot Four Videos In Three Days

"It's kind of a funny story with ODB," Jimmy said with a chuckle. "He was supposed to show up at 10 a.m., but he showed up at 10 p.m. I love him! When ODB finally did come up, we bashed in a couple of cop car windows. He's looking crazy, doing his ODB thing. Whether he was late or not, he still did his thing and it was my pleasure [to direct him]."

Killah Priest Reunites with Wu, Talks Possible Gravediggaz Reunion

Regardless of the pulled RZA/GZA track, Killah Priest has tracks coming out on various Wu Tang solo projects, and recently even scored Ol' Dirty Bastard (a.k.a. Dirt McGirt) for a new remix to be included as a bonus track on a re-release of Black August. To celebrate the coup, Priest is currently making a tour of radio stations, dropping off "Do the Damn Thing (Remix)" and spreading the word.
"Dirt came through, showed like a gentleman--I couldn't believe it, I was like 'O.D.B!' He laid his verse down and the sh!t was dope. Word. He just showed me love. When artists show each other love like that, there's a mutual feeling. We're all coming up. I'm on an independent label right now--we got the money to do things, but we got to make the right moves."
ODB Living It Up And 'Blending In' With His Food

"I terrorize this sh--," Dirty said rather nonchalantly prior to meeting up with Rock. "The album is going pretty good. It's terrorizing, and I calmed down a little. I'm blending in with my foods. We just working it out, taking it day by day. Taking a hit, plugging it into the archives and just waiting for sh-- to boil. It's a surprise. It's gonna be hot."

...

Away from the mic and his other ventures, Dirty continues to re-establish himself in society while dealing with being on parole.

"It's going slowly but surely," he said with a smile, displaying a huge gap in the middle of gold teeth. "I'm just doing my thing, living it up, catching up to sh-- that I ain't do the last two or three years. That's about it — living my life, having a good time, ducking [my parole] officer. He's cool, though. Right after my album drops in December or January, I'm going on tour. After my album we're gonna make another Wu-Tang album."
Wu-Tang star RZA signs to Sanctuary Records

WU-TANG CLAN founder RZA has become the latest star to sign with blossoming independent label SANCTUARY RECORDS.
The star will release 'Birth Of A Prince' , his debut solo record as RZA, on October 7 in the US. A UK release date has yet to confirmed.
The album will also feature collaborations with Wu-Tang's Dirt McGirt (Ol' Dirty Bastard) and Ghostface Killah. McGirt will appear on the first single, 'We Pop'.
'I believe this to be some of the best work I have ever done and I am especially proud,' RZA said.
